DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SHORT STORY AND NOVEL
A short story is not a shortened novel. It has a distinct and well-marked structure. The differences are several.
>The novel portrays life on a border level than the short story. The short story writer deals with only a fragment of life - 'a slice of life' as Poe called it.
>The characters in the novel are many and multidimensional. In short story there are only a few characters and with less complexity.
>The novel deals with the evolution of character whereas in the short story there is no such evolution takes place as the scope is limited.
>A novel may contain long descriptions, narrations and dialogue. But in a short story these are restricted to the minimum.
>A novel may deal with several emotions and motives. But a short story is like a lyric in the sense that it generally concentrates on one motive or emotion.
