FEATURES OF LYRICAL POETRY



Qualities of a lyrical poetry:

  • Shortness: Generally lyrical poem is short in nature. But there are some lyrical poetry which is long like Ode to the West Wind, The Raven etc.
  •  Simplicity: A lyric is simple in language and it is considered as one of its prominent features. It is composed in a manner where everyone can understand the poetry and get delighted with its essence.
  • Subjectivity: A lyric most of the time is an expression of mood and emotion of the poet. The tone used is emotional tone. The poet expresses his feelings and emotions through which he tries to communicate to the readers. 
  • Musical: One of the prominent qualities of a lyrical poem is its musical quality. The poets use various literary devices to enhance the musical quality in their lyric.
  • Intensity: The best poem has an intensity which reaches the readers heart. Likely the best lyric is the one where the poet expresses his feelings and emotions that come directly from the poet's heart and is intense. The intensity makes the readers imagine himself in the place of the poet where he feels the poet and his emotions. 
  • Spontaneity: Spontaneity is another important quality of a lyrical poem. It is achieved when the poet writes the poem because of his urge for self expression.

1. Anonymous, 'Fowls in the Frith'

Foulës in the frith,
The fishës in the flod,
And I mon waxë wod;
Much sorwe I walkë with
For beste of bon and blod.

2. Sir Thomas Wyatt, 'Whoso List To Hunt'

Whoso list to hunt, I know where is an hind,
But as for me, hélas, I may no more.
The vain travail hath wearied me so sore,
I am of them that farthest cometh behind …

3. Robert Herrick, 'Upon Julia's Clothes'

Whenas in silks my Julia goes,
Then, then, methinks, how sweetly flows
The liquefaction of her clothes …
