CHARACTERISTICS OF SONNET:

  • All the sonnets are built of fourteen lines, which can be broken down into four sections called quatrains. Out of these four sections, the first three quatrains consists of four lines each and use an alternating rhyme scheme. The final quatrain consists of just two lines, which both rhyme.
  • There is a strict rhyme scheme. For example the rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet is always ABAB/CDCD/EFEF/GG.
  • Sonnets are written in iambic pentameter.  

The most well-known examples of sonnets in English language were written by Shakespeare. His theme mainly consists of love, jealousy, beauty infidelity, the passage of time, and death

Out of his 154 sonnets, few of his stand outs are "A Summer's Day" and "Dark Lady"
